Newborn Photography in Lexington, KY: Everything You Need to Know

Over 60,000 babies are born in the state of Kentucky each year. With each new birth comes the opportunity to capture some of life’s most precious moments on camera!

If you’re interested in newborn photography or infant photography, you’re probably searching for a “photographer near me.” Before you settle on a photographer, you might want to know a bit about what to expect and how to prepare!

A good photographer is prepared for any hiccups you might encounter during your photoshoot. However, there are still ways you can make the experience smoother for everyone, including your baby!

Read on to learn more about newborn photography and how to find a great newborn photographer in Lexington, KY.

What to Expect During a Newborn Photography Shoot

When it comes to photographing newborns, it’s best to expect the unexpected. Whether you’re a first-time parent or this isn’t your first rodeo, you know already that your infant’s disposition can change in an instant!

Tantrums Happen

When sleep, hunger, or gas take over, he or she can get a little bit fussy. If that happens during your photoshoot, don’t panic!

Do your best to address the different issues that may be causing discomfort and keep a cool head–it’ll pass! If it seems like your baby wants to sleep, go ahead and let him or her drift off. Your photographer can snap some beautiful, serene photos of your sleeping angel.

Will We Get the Smile Shot?

Whether or not you’ll end up with a few pictures of your baby smiling depends, primarily, on his or her age. You’ve probably seen him or her smile a few times already, but did you know that this may be an automatic reflex?

Babies go through a short stage, from a few weeks old to about two months old, where smiling indicates physical pleasure. In other words, they may smile when they get a pesky gas bubble out or eat something really tasty. It’s not voluntary, which means no amount of silly noises or faces will produce it!

That doesn’t mean that your photographer won’t capture a smile. Babies go through all sorts of physical changes throughout the day, and the automatic smile tends to linger long enough that an attentive photographer will manage to capture it.

If you want to up your chances of what we call a “social smile,” schedule your photoshoot sometime after the one and a half month mark. At that point, infants have started to mirror behaviors they see in their parents and other people around them. They’re much more likely to smile at you if you smile at them once they reach this age!

How to Prepare

Now that you have a sense of what to expect from your newborn photography shoot, let’s talk about ways that you can prepare.

Keep an Open Mind

There are tons of fantastic examples of newborn photography floating around the internet. There may be a few shots you have your heart set on, and your photographer will work to make that dream become a reality. However, don’t forget what we mentioned earlier–newborns don’t always behave the way you want them to!

Even if you don’t leave with exact replicas of the photos you saw and loved online, you are guaranteed some truly amazing photos. Newborn photographers have tons of creative ways to capture the beauty and sweetness of your baby. Work with someone you trust to create an album of photos you will cherish for the rest of your life.

Bring Backup Outfits and Blankets

If you’re styling parts of the photoshoot yourself, whether that’s with clothing or soft, cozy materials, make sure to bring extras. That way, if anything gets a little dirty in the process, there’s no reason to worry. You can just change out the messy props for your backups and keep moving forward with the photoshoot!

Bring a Snack

Ideally, you’ll want to make sure your baby has eaten and had time to digest and get comfortable before the photo shoot begins. However, we all know that you can’t decide exactly when a newborn eats or when he or she gets hungry again! Bring some formula or a few snacks in your bag so that any “hangry” feelings can be resolved quickly!

Choosing from Newborn Photographers in Lexington, KY

Tons of photographers market their abilities to capture fantastic photos of newborns in Lexington, Kentucky. That can make your decision a little bit more difficult.

Take some time to look at the photographer’s gallery to get a sense of their style. Do you like what you see? Do they seem versatile in their prop usage, angles, and positioning?

Next, take a look at their reviews. This will give you a better sense of how previous clients have felt about their work and whether or not they’d consider going back in the future.
